Mary C. Lovato, Kewa (Santo Domingo)
From the master herself, Mary C. Lovato, we offer this wearable work of art. A mosaic of crushed turquoise from different mines in different hues of blues and greens with matrix colors that range from black to white, even ocher yellow. In this universe of turquoise Mary outlined a coral spiral and a star, and a coral and jet half-moon in sterling silver. Framed with sterling silver and overlaid on gold lip shell the pendant is about 2 5/8" long and 2" at the top. On the back Mary attached a sterling silver bale through which runs a luscious string of turquoise beads. These beads are about 21" long finished with sterling silver melon shaped beads and a large hook and eye closure. One red coral bead accents the strand. Signed by the artist.
The Sunface is an iconic Zuni symbol that honors Father Sun and represents the balance of sky and earth, without which life would not exist. April Unkestine is well known for her sunface inlay work. Here she offers us a stunning sterling silver belt buckle with a large sunface inlaid in the center. Traditional coral, turquoise, and jet make up the face, accented with gold lip shell. Around the face is a feather motif of gold lip shell and turquoise. A hand fabricated sterling silver braid frames the sunface. In each corner April has repeated the feather motif in more turquoise and gold lip shell. All hand fabricated this buckle measures about 2 1/2" by 1 1/2". It will accommodate a 1 " belt. Signed by the artist.
