Around 1987 artist Carlos Laate started making pottery. After high school graduation and military service, he came home and began as a jeweler, then a carver and eventually clay work. His inspiration comes from his grandparents who were also silversmiths and potters, his parents were as well. He acknowledges that Mother Earth gives all the materials to work with, no traders and money exchanged to get what is already provided. A charming and small natural clay pottery
Owlet was hand-formed with precious tufts, wings and tail feathers to a size of roughly 2 3/8" tall, 1 3/4" wide and 1 1/2" deep. Scalloped plumage is layered from both vegetable and mineral derived pigments. Eyes are wide and awake signaling a protective spirit. Signed by the artist.
