Bison were almost hunted to extinction by European colonizers. Today, Indigenous tribes are at the forefront of bison recovery bringing them back to treaty lands. Their ancient wisdom reveals that Bison heal by reversing damage to ecosystems. Built to keep moving, bison don't overdo their stay in one area. Instead natural behaviors like grazing patterns create nesting areas for birds. Their hooves aerate the soil for seeds to grow. As they wallow and roll around, they create depressions that fill with rain, serving as pools for amphibians, insects and are sources of drinking water for wildlife. Darrell Westika's mighty buffalo with turquoise eyes has been carved from sandstone to a size of approximately 7" long, 3 1/4" wide and 4 1/4" tall. We love the natural grainy feel of the sandstone, while the intricate etching beautifully details the head and hump regions.

Todd Westika is from the Quam and Quandelacy family of noted Zuni artists. As a youth, a love for rocks and minerals eventually drew him to become a geo engineer, graduating from New Mexico Tech. Later, a trip home to Zuni changed his life course as he decided to become a full-time carver instead. His late aunt Rhoda Quam taught him the fundamentals, while his grandmother said to "always have good thoughts when you are working because that energy goes into the carving.” Todd's first piece was a hunched-back Bear. His motor for grinding came from an old washing machine.

Sculpted from Mexican onyx said to hold properties that encourage positive thinking and emotional balance, Todd's good energy Bison measures about 4 1/4" long, 1" wide and roughly 2 1/4" tall. He enjoys carving with unusual and non-toxic stones. Mighty horns are from pen shell and discerning eyes are from sterling silver inlays. An elegantly carved turquoise point is joined by silver and coral beads in the offering bundle.

Indigenous tribes are bringing brother buffalo back to ancestral lands after The Great Slaughter by European colonizers from about 1820 to 1880. The bison population plummeted from millions of bison to fewer than 1,000 animals by the 1890s. Bison are revered for giving every part of themselves to sustain the lives of others. Regarded as relatives, tribute is given to buffalo through songs, dance and prayers. They are a keystone species whose many contributions include strong hooves that aerate the soil cultivating seeds vital to ecosystems. An open valley finds Roselle Shack's contented Bison grazing on woody plants by a stream. The marble is accented with sgraffito treatment giving the carving a wonderful visual appeal. Mindful eyes and mighty horns are from turquoise inlays. Measurements are approximately 3 7/8" long, 1" wide and 2" tall.
