Maxx Laate comes from an esteemed family of carvers. His brother was talented artist Willard Laate (d).
Maxx's awesome chameleon (Lizard) is hewn from one specimen of antler. It has lots of amazing spikes, vivid turquoise inlaid eyes and drilled nostrils, not to mention gorgeous scale detailing. At the tip of this reptile's tongue is a cool flying insect. Part of a lizard's medicine is about remembering our dreams and focusing on our deepest visions. About 6 1/2" tall, 1 1/2" wide and 2" deep.
The Spider, in folklore, is often associated with different creation myths because of their artistic weaving techniques in which they create their own world. Maxx Latte carved six spiders climbing up and down, not a water spout, but an antler tip. Spiders should not be feared but held in reverence, as Mark Bahti writes that spider is "wisest of all creatures" in his book Spirit In The Stone. This tribute to the wise weaver is about 5" tall and 1 3/4" deep including the natural curve of the deer antler.
