Sandstone is a wonderful sedimentary rock composed of grains of sand that are bound together by a matrix of minerals, valued for a unique natural beauty and versatility. Burt Awelagte's journeying Bear enjoys a scenic outing through turquoise inlaid eyes. This adventurer is carved from sandstone with intriguing organic designs that call to mind ancient rock formations and stunning views of Indigenous lands. Clear quartz, soft green turquoise and fine heishe beads compose the offering bundle representing gratitude for powerful brother bear. Measurements are approximately 4 3/4" long, 1 7/8" wide and 3 1/8" tall.

Zuni Olla Maidens are one of the most renowned dance groups in New Mexico. The members dance with fragile pottery jars or ollas, balanced on the top of their heads. Traditionally ollas would be used to transport all kinds of things including sacred Corn meal or life-giving water. Burt Awelagte's Olla Maiden is carved from a matrix-rich turquoise. The sculpted jar is from another gorgeous variety of turquoise, permanently attached to the Olla Maiden. Facial features are from clean jet inlays. An offering necklace has moonstone and turquoise beads. Dimensions including the lovely angelite base are approximately 4 3/8" tall, 1 5/8" wide and 1 1/8" deep.

Sandstone formed in layers called bedding, signs of the past environment. It was the stone of choice when constructing such famous buildings like the gateways to the Taj Mahal in India. Burt Awelagte's endearing Bear has been sculpted from a stunning sandstone swirling with ancient time. Burt Awelagte lets the stone direct the shape of the animal. Here he has carved an observant bushytail (Fox, Wolf or Coyote) with turquoise eyes from a gorgeous leopard marble, a favorite medium of Burt's. The way in which he secured the offering bundle is somewhat loose resulting in some movement. It contains green turquoise and golden amber nuggets. We can protect our wild canine friends by supporting legislation that bans inhumane traps and snares. About 2 1/2" long, 7/8" wide and roughly 1 3/4" tall. View item

A wee seashell with turquoise nuggets rest a top the back of this mineral found in the hills around Tonopah, Nevada. The golden matrix makes the turquoise that much more beautiful.
