Touche's Turtle Story

By Andrew Quam

This offering is sold.

Andrew Quam starting carving when he was 11 years old. He was already poking wax out of holes from the stringing animals his folks had carved when he was only 8. He recently shared a delightful story with us from his childhood. One day his grandfather brought home an aquatic turtle, possibly a red-eared slider, that he intended to use in the making of a rattle. Little Andrew covertly rescued the reptile, fed and cared for it by making a watery home inside a wash tub complete with rocks. He named it Touche after a turtle cartoon character. He was fascinated with his new friend and would observe its wonderful features. Andrew would take Touche outdoors to freely roam about and even bury itself to brumate for the winter. He kept the turtle's whereabouts a secret for 5 years from his grandfather. For 15 years young Andrew watched over Touche, then outside one day the adored turtle decided to move on to touch another life. This wonderful experience inspired his carving of turtles.

Andrew's latest offering is a multi-layered shell Turtle from gold lip mother-of-pearl shell, colorful turquoise and spiny oyster shell. The elegantly etched carapace is inlaid with turquoise and red coral accents. This coral-eyed sweetheart is about 1 3/8" long, 1 1/8" wide and 3/8" tall.
