In Zuni tradition, long ago Corn-Maidens saved the Zunis from famine and drought by nourishing them with sacred corn kernels from their bodies. Andrew Quam's travertine corn maiden's striking beauty is emphasized by a turquoise face with jet and red coral features. Crushed turquoise on the base of Silverado jet represents water. Including the base, measurements are as follows: about 3" tall, 2 1/4" wide and 2 3/8" deep.
Andrew is a wonderful carver from the greater Johnny Quam (d), Andrew Emerson Quam (d) and Bossie Quam (d) family of noted Zuni artists. Andrew's mother was Rosalia Quam (d) who learned the art from her step-father George Cheechee Haloo (d). She was well-known for stringing bird fetishes and also for her animal carvings. Rosalia and her husband Andrew Emerson Quam taught their children, including Andrew how to carve.
