Anchorage, Alaska has been blessed by the presence of a white raven with blue eyes who has appeared in the town since October of last year. Indigenous Yup’ik, Tsimshian, Lingít and Haida elders believe a white raven is a special messenger. They know it is mankind's job to steward the earth. If the earth is sick, we’re sickened too. So the white raven's presence means a shift towards peace and healing is at hand. White ravens are rare in nature and are not considered albino. Albinism is the absence of a pigment called melanin which results in the animal being white with red eyes and pink legs. White ravens have leucism which is a partial loss of this pigment and their eyes are usually blue. Albino animals aren't really white but more of a cream color. Any animal can have leucism. Joshua Qualo's nicely detailed Raven chick has been carved from antler and inlaid with sky-blue turquoise eyes. A darling corvid that's about 2" long, 1" wide and 1 3/8" tall.
