On a nightly foraging expedition, Cody Chavez's softly-smiling hedgehog waddles through the undergrowth snuffling and huffing along the way. Sweet eyes are from turquoise, while a sniffing nose is from jet. Carved from a tagua nut, it measures about 1 5/8" long, 1 1/4" wide and 1 1/8" tall. Tagua nuts or seeds fall naturally from the Phytelephas palm which grows in the rainforests and swampy lowlands of Central and South America. Some carvers enjoy utilizing the tagua nut because it is rock hard, durable and cuts cleanly.
