Katsinas are powerful and immortal spirits to the Hopi Pueblo People. They are called tithu or katsintithu, sacred supernatural beings who function as messengers between the spiritual worlds. Katsina dolls are representations of these beings and are not sacred themselves. Virgil Long is a wonderful woodworker of cottonwood creating colorful acrylic-painted Katsina dolls like his latest offering "Snow Maiden". Her presence represents prayers for snowfall that ensure fertile land for planting season. Dimensions of this signed by the artist woodwork are approximately 8 1/2" tall, 2 3/8" wide and 2" deep.
