Carved from Purisima stone, this Bison by Vince Chavez is covered in the remains of mollusks, gastropods, bivalves, and other marine life from ages long past. This stone come from the Purisima Formation in California and contains fossilized evidence of the ocean floor from the late Miocene to the late Pliocene epochs, and when cut into and carved by talented Zuni artists like Vince, the edges of those fossils begin to look like the scribblings of an ancient language. Fossils are a way for the past to communicate with us, sharing secrets of the millions of years of Earth's history and helping us understand the secrets of our own time. This bison is covered in beautiful fragments of life from long ago, and by examining the fossils within we see familiar shapes, reminding us that the past is not as far away as it feels.
Vince's beautiful and ancient feeling bison is approximately 6 1/4" long, 2" wide, and 4 1/4" tall with bright turquoise eyes.
