Before the 1800's, New Mexico river valleys were rich with Beaver. In their search for wealth trappers came to the Southwest. At that time the town of Taos, New Mexico, like many others, became a hub of relentless trapping and ancestral river valleys were stripped of their beaver residents. Though beaver are on the rebound there is still a long way to go before we see these ecological water masters reach their historic numbers. Local conservation groups are working to mitigate flooding by installing pond levelers which enable beavers to build their dams without blocking irrigation ditches. Education efforts are helping the general public embrace and understand the natural engineering power of beavers. Enrike Leekya's Picasso marble water friend is busy at work holding a branch red coral piece. Incisors are from iridescent mother-of-pearl, while attentive eyes and a little nose are from turquoise. About 2" tall, 1" wide and 2" deep.
