The Cochiti People believe Avanyu is a sacred water serpent and a vital guardian of water ways. Sightings have occurred near the Cochiti Lake area. The serpent's body forms the flowing Rio Grande and its tributaries in New Mexico. For A:Shiwi (The People) Kolowisi is the traditional horned or feathered serpent who is also a guardian of water sources and can move around aquifers and into the Zuni River, Salt Lake or any body of water. He is very sacred and sometimes is brought into Zuni as a katsina. Salvador Romero's wonderful water serpent is carved from a found stone to a dimension of roughly 5 1/4" long, 5/8" wide and 1 5/8" tall.
