Hippopotamuses are able to remain under water, breathing and seeing for considerable amounts of time. This is due to the fact that their noses, ears and eyes are located on the top of their head. These graceful swimmers are the third largest land mammal and are doting parents to their calves, fiercely protecting them. A mother will stay in the water with her newborn for many days without eating and she patiently waits until her little one is strong enough before they leave the water in order to graze at night. Mothers nurse their babies even underwater, for about eight months. Maxx Laate's attentive mother hippo and sweet calf are hewn from one portion of antler, each with turquoise inlaid eyes. About 1 1/4" tall, 1 1/4" wide and 1" deep.
