Justin Red Elk is from the greater Leonard Halate (d) family of Zuni artists. His mother is carver Pansy Natachu. Justin's uncle and aunts are carvers Herbert Halate, Reva Halate and Marvelita Phillips, among many other wonderful artists from this lineage. Carved from jet and lovely gold lip shell is this incredible hornet. It has incised wings in addition to pipestone inlaid eyes and accents. A colorful flying insect with measurements of approximately 3" long, 2" wide and 5/8" tall. A hornet is a relative of the yellow-jacket wasp. Hornets and wasps protect gardens and crops from destructive pests.
