In Zuni tradition,
Turtles have a rain association and serve as links to the Zuni ancestors. In prehistoric times, turtle or
Edo:wa in the Zuni language, appeared as jewelry. Andrew Quam's layered black mother-of-pearl and turquoise turtle is presented in pendant form. This coral-eyed reptile is about 1 5/8" long, 1 1/4" wide and 1/2" tall. A lovely incised carapace has been inlaid with red coral and turquoise pieces. Etched claws are darkened with jet paste.
