Melvin Sandoval, San Felipe-Zuni
Long slender bills or beaks, and tube-like tongues assist Hummingbirds as they fuel up on nectar from all kinds of blooms. Because they're the only birds that can sustain long-term hovering, they need to sip nectar regularly to keep their energy up. They're vital pollinators too. Magical and determined, these little birds dress up the skies with their brightly colored and sparkling plumage. These tiny beings teach us to joyfully open our hearts to others, to receive love and to give it.
Melvin Sandoval's serpentine hummingbird brings joyful medicine. An incredible spiny oyster shell beak is spectacular. A flint or found stone point, along with turquoise and shell beads accompany this approximate 2 3/8" long, 1 1/2" wide and 1 1/2" tall feathered friend delight.
Justin Red Elk, Zuni-Sioux
Hummingbirds are important pollinators. Botanists and biologists have identified more than 150 native plant species that have developed special tube-shaped flowers in order to receive a hummingbird's feeding. A vital and symbiotic relationship indeed, as a hummingbird eats the nectar and spreads a plant's pollen in the process.
We love Justin Red Elk's hummingbirds. He is from the greater Leonard Halate (d) family of Zuni artists. His mother is carver Pansy Natachu. Justin's uncle and aunts are carvers Herbert Halate, Reva Halate and Marvelita Phillips, among many other wonderful artists from this lineage.
Carved from wood, Justin's delightful hummingbird is about 1 3/4" tall, 5/8" wide and 1 3/4" deep. It has sweet eyes of inlaid jet and a magnificent mother-of-pearl beak.
Bobby & Corraine Shack
A Hummingbird alights Bobby and Corraine Shack's sterling silver, glistening abalone, mother-of-pearl, pen shell, turquoise, coral and gold lip shell inlaid unisex bolo tie. Sipping nectar from a mother-of-pearl, red coral, abalone and pen shell flower, this feathered friend fuels up.
An adjustable 44" long black leather braided bolo with sterling silver tips hosts this winged delight. The tips themselves are about 2 1/4" long. The hummingbird and flower station is approximately 3" long and 3 1/2" wide. Signed by the artists.
