A celebration of motherhood is seen in Kateri Quandelacy Sanchez's reversible mother and children carving from gold lip mother-of-pearl shell. Corn Maidens have incised Corn on their bodies. Inlays from turquoise, red coral, lapis and sugilite are set. Their shared shawl is beautifully fringed and adorned with red coral and turquoise. Etched stars are also seen. Facial features are carved and darkened with jet paste. About 3 1/2" tall, 2 1/2" wide and 3/4" deep.
Kateri's mother was Georgia Quandelacy (d). Grandmother Ellen Quandelacy (d) taught all her children the art, as she was taught by her father Johnny Quam (d).
