Although there will be no SWAIA Santa Fe Indian Market this year you can still bring home this amazing and ribbon winning piece from the 98th Market (2019). This gorgeous piece by Troy Sice won an Honorable Mention ribbon in the same year that Troy won the Best in Show award in the Class V: Sculpture category for a separate entry.
Out of the six directional protectors for the A:shiwi (Zuni People), the white Wolf is the guardian of the east. This wolf by Troy's carved from antler, on the look out, ready to pounce and yet gently carries a sweet blue bird friend. The bird is tied in with an obsidian arrow point with beads of turquoise and coral as an offering bundle carried on the back. The piece measures about 8 1/2" long by 3" across and stands at 8" tall. The wolf's eyes are inlaid lapis. The brown detailing of the nose, ears and tail are from expert burnishing of the antler to bring out the brown coloring. Extra shipping charges may apply.
Troy is an accomplished carver who comes from a long family history of carvers. He is a third-generation carver, the grandson of George H. CheeChee, nephew of Ramie and Miguel Haloo and half-brother of Colvin Peina. His creations have garnered awards in many shows across the country, including Best Of Show in the 94th (2015) SWAIA Santa Fe Indian Market, Class V: Sculpture category.
A collectible and reversible mother-of-pearl Mountain-lion pendant fetish necklace, about 26" in length, is strung with a double strand of lovely heishe shell and other colorful beads, by Andres Quandelacy. The center mountain lion has an inlaid turquoise heartline on either side, plus eyes of inlaid turquoise, and measures about 1 5/8" long and 1 3/8" tall. Joining this feline are friends such as Bear, bushytails (Wolf, Coyote or Fox), Bison, mountain sheep or ram, Mole, and Elk or Deer. They are carved from green turquoise, lapis, mother-of-pearl, magnesite, jet, malachite and spiny oyster shell. They have inlaid eyes of turquoise and the bison have little horns of turquoise. This fabulous necklace comes with Andres Quandelacy's sterling silver signature label attached.
Franklin Carrillo, Laguna
Using channel inlay and hollow form techniques Franklin Carrillo hand build these sculptural beauties. The inlaid lapis, coral, malachite, sugilite, spiny oyster shell, turquoise, and mother of pearl shell window panes create a contemporary design. The hollow form building technique gives them mass without adding weight. About 1" long, 1/4" wide and the bottom, and 1/4" deep each earring weighs .2 oz, the same as 2 quarters.
Ray Tsalate's Mountain-lion of antler stands on hind legs to look you square in the eye. Wearing a kilt and moccasins decorated with the inlaid designs and accent stones of turquoise, variscite, lapis and sugilite. The feathered serpent on the kilt ends in a coiled spiral and was created with inlaid sodalite, pipestone and jet. This cat's face is really sweet too, eagerly looking out of eyes of inlaid gold lip mother of pearl with malachite pupils with a shiny nose of pen shell. About 4" tall, 1 1/2" wide and 3 1/4" deep, with a nice long tail!
Jovanna Poblano's exquisite Butterfly bracelet is all handmade. Its wings showcase gorgeous turquoise and faceted lapis stones. This winged-wonder has a turquoise face with silver beads for antennae. Jovanna backed this comfortable cuff with soft brown suede. The bracelet's entire inner circumference is about 6 3/8" including the opening of 1", it is about 1" wide. The butterfly is about 1 5/8" from antennae to wing end, and has a wingspan of about 1 3/4". Signed-by-the-artist, this show stopping cuff is bordered top and bottom with amazing abalone beads. Isaac Coriz, Kewa (Santo Domingo)
Isaac Coriz's latest offering is this fabulous thunderbird bolo with additional mosaic design elements bordered by generous sterling silver borders. Isaac selected gorgeous specimens of New Landers, Cerrillos, and Kingman turquoises, red coral, and lapis to create this all hand made bolo. The mosaic is overlaid on a scrumptious piece of black lip mother of pearl shell which is slightly convex. With sterling silver tips the bolo hangs at about 22 1/2" while the mosaic station measures about 3 1/4" long by 1 1/2" wide. The substantial and supple dark brown leather cord is hand braided. A stunning work of wearable art! The underside of this piece is etched with a hand, rain cloud, and corn elements and is signed by the artist.
