Sheryl and Strallie Edaakie's sunface earrings are all hand made by carefully inlaying stones and shell lining up perfectly next to each other and setting them into sterling silver. Turquoise, coral, mother of pearl, jet, and pen shell come together creating the image. These teardrop-shaped earrings dangle at about 2" long including earring fixture, and are 1/2" wide. The reverse side carries the artist's signature stamp.
The Zunis believe that the sunface symbol is good luck, as it represents balance in life: traditionally, turquoise (blue) stands for Father Sky, coral (red) stands for Mother Earth, and mother of pearl shell (white) and black jet represent all the elements in balance. Artists use their creative license and often choose different colored stones or shells in their pieces.
