Each mineral has a unique chemical composition which determines what color it will be. Also, interaction with other minerals and environmental factors contribute to its uniqueness.
We're enjoying the Picasso marble specimen Nelson Yatsattie chose to carve a wonderful Bear from as it resembles a powerful thunderstorm discharging positive cloud-to-ground lightning. This variety of lightning is super powerful originating from the upper regions of a thunderstorm sometimes coming from seemingly clear skies. Expressive eyes are from turquoise inlays, while muzzle and claw details are sgraffito-etched. About 2 1/2" long, 1" wide and 1 3/8" tall.
