Ricky Laahty comes from the greater Leekya Deyuse (d) family of gifted and important Zuni fetish carvers. Leekya Deyuse's niece Sadie Laahty (d), married Morris Laahty (d). Morris was a talented inlay jeweler and father to Ricky, teaching him vital lapidary skills and techniques.
Two Frogs have been carved by Ricky, from a gorgeous fluorite stone that looks like the watery environment they thrive in. Webbed feet and realistic eyes of jet in gold lip shell are wonderful. And hidden underneath this amazing carving, is a fish companion, also with jet in gold lip shell eyes. About 2 1/4" long, 1 3/8" wide and 1 5/8" tall.
This impressive many-colored fish has been masterfully carved by Brian Yatsattie from motor agate a gorgeous recycled material made from many colorful layers of car paint. Brian painstakingly carved a cross hatch texture representing scales while the head and gills are smooth to the touch. About 2 1/2" long, 2" wide this carving lays flat and is 1/2" thick. This is a fish you won't want to release.
Brian Yatsattie is no stranger to unusual materials. His latest carving, is a fish of colorful and translucent surfite with eyes of inlaid jet. This fish looks slippery but won't wriggle away from you. A decent catch by any fisherman's measure, this fish is about 7 5/8" long, 7/8" wide by 2" tall.
