In the old days Zuni women retrieved and carried water for daily needs by filling large beautiful pottery jars called ollas and gracefully balancing them on their heads. Here Corn-Maiden and Grandmother share the workload. A sculpted olla jar from turquoise holds crushed turquoise to represent life-giving water. Bits of red coral are present too. Corn Maiden's face is from overlaid turquoise with jet paste. Incised Dragonflies adorn them as do colorful accents from red coral, turquoise, alunite and lapis lazuli. A lovely reversible Picasso marble carving by Sandra Quandelacy that measures about 3 1/8" tall, 1/2" wide and 7/8" deep.
