The Zuni Sunface is a traditional design symbolizing a balance of the elements as seen on Danette Laate's Corn-Maiden or Maiden Grandmother. It's made from coral, jet and turquoise. Hair worn in whorls signifies she hasn't had children but has mothered many. She may be a Maiden Grandmother because not only is her hair in whorls but she wears a shawl. Carved from a desert-hued picture jasper, facial features are set with turquoise and jet. A corn leaf blade is etched and inlaid with a turquoise accent on the back of her shawl. Dragonfly hovers nearby. About 1 3/4" tall, 1 3/8" wide and 5/8" deep.
