Douglas Martza
Power with gracefulness emanates from Douglas Martza's Corn-Maiden sculpted from onyx. Elegantly incised long hair, confident turquoise eyes and a red coral mouth are features of this approximately 2" tall, 1" wide and 3/4" deep carving. Etched Dragonflies with coral inlays adorn a lovely shawl, while a corn body is beautifully worked accented with turquoise.
Kateri Quandelacy Sanchez, Zuni-Acoma
Shiva Lingam stone is a sacred rock found only on the banks of the Narmada River in India, one of seven holy sites. Its good energy is said to be revitalizing and calming, among other attributes. Zuni Pueblo artist Kateri Quandelacy Sanchez carved a serene Corn Maiden from one of these incredible stones. Interestingly, the first carving she made was a Corn Maiden when she was very young. Corn kernels are etched while an overlaid soothing face is from iridescent gold lip shell. Features are filled with jet paste. Hovering dragonfly companions and stars adorn a smooth shawl. About 4 1/2" tall, 2" wide and 2" deep.
Kateri Quandelacy Sanchez's gifted hands carved a delightful Corn-Maiden (or Maiden Grandmother) from turquoise. Hair is traditionally whorled. Red coral accents the corn body, while etched stars and a Dragonfly adorn. As a young girl, Kateri's first carving was a Corn Maiden. About 1 7/8" tall, 1 1/4" wide and 3/8" deep.
Rare garnierite sometimes called green moonstone is said to refresh the soul by reconnecting the heart to the natural world. As a spiritual amulet, some say it helps to alleviate anxiety and depression through the healing of old wounds we may carry. This exquisite mineral is a green nickel ore originally found in New Caledonia around 1867 by French mining engineer Jules Garnier. Master carver Kateri Quandelacy Sanchez's stunning Corn-Maiden with etched Dragonfly and star designs is sculpted from a delicious portion of garnierite. A soothing face is from overlaid shell with etched features filled with jet paste. A purple alunite cabochon adorns her. About 4 3/4" tall, 3 5/8" wide and 2 1/4" deep.
Sandra Quandelacy
Lion's paw shell comes from a bivalve that lives in the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. The fascinating shell has prominent textured ridges with knobs that call to mind a lion's paw, hence its name. Sandra Quandelacy's collectible Corn-Maiden and Grandmother pendant necklace features a stunning sampling of orange lion's paw shell specimens. Representing intuitive strength and nurturing power, each feminine fetish has etched facial features, including some Dragonfly and star elements, all filled with jet paste. They range in size from about 1 1/4" to 2" long. The stunning necklace is about 26", a fashionable length. Some of the laced beads include red coral and pearls.
Joel Pajarito, Kewa (Santo Domingo)
Joel Pajarito's stunning Rain and Corn Spirit pin/pendant was created in the tufa cast method. It involves slicing tufa into manageable portions and carving meaningful designs into the sandstone. Molten silver is poured into the block and cooled. Joel's father Anthony Lovato started creating signature Spirit pendants in 1990. Joel's magnificent Rain and Corn Maiden Spirit pin/pendant is made with Kingman turquoise and tufa cast sterling silver. The bale's design is shaped similar to the hook of a shepherd's staff. Signed by the artist. About 3 5/8" long and 1 1/8" wide. The silver snake chain is not included.
