Sandra Quandelacy is from the great Quandelacy family of Zuni artists. Her late mother was Ellen Quandelacy, known for carved animal necklaces and skills at channel inlay jewelry. Sandra continues in the family's artistic legacy through innovative carvings that celebrate the female spirit.
Her latest offering is a stunning ammonite transformed into a Turtle honoring work. They have a rain association in Zuni, bridging the aquatic and terrestrial realms. They remind us to respect Mother Earth and the interconnectedness of all living things. The little reptile is sculpted from gorgeous Kingman turquoise nestled in crushed malachite. Also living in rhythm with the water creature are many Corn-Maidens and Grandmothers. A Sunface symbol rises over the ancient village and represents the elements in balance. It is from pipestone, lapis and turquoise. The powerful women's facial features are from turquoise, white shell and mother-of-pearl, skillfully etched and accented with jet paste. Colorful inlays adorn the piece from lapis, coral, malachite, alunite and jet. At the top of the carving is a small olla jar filled with crushed lapis to represent water. Dragonflies also make their presence known. About 2 5/8" tall, 3" wide and 3/4" deep.
