Animal: Badger, Material: Antler
This offering is sold.

Viewed as powerful creatures that help medicine men dig roots, the badger is an important animal among the Zuni people, and a personal favorite among the staff here at Keshi. With powerful forelegs, sharp claws, and enhanced senses, these fierce creatures are underground dwellers and have been seen hunting cooperatively with coyotes. Badger (Donashi) is a tenacious and fearless being, and we can learn how to embody that fighting spirit, how to take charge and focus on our goals through its teachings. Since badgers are often associated with medicine, their persistent attitude can help those injured and ill to focus on healing.

This donashi was cared by Troy Sice, from a wonderful piece of antler. Troy's skill at carving, inlay, polishing, and the ephemeral stages of capturing the spirit of an animal are one full display with this wonderful badger friend. The hairy coat is expressed through carefully incised lines, and Troy has filled the stripes of the badger with pipestone and jet paste. Tiny turquoise eyes and a small burnished nose complete this adorable carving. Troy's badger is 2 3/4" long,1 5/8" wide, and 1 1/4" tall.

Troy is an award winning third-generation carver, the grandson of the late George CheeChee Haloo, nephew of late artists Ramie and Miguel Haloo, and half-brother of the late carver Colvin Peina . His creations have garnered awards in many shows across the country, including multiple ribbons durning this year's SWAIA Market.
