Bears are a spiritual and ecological force. They are fellow beings considered close family members by Indigenous cultures. Bears teach us qualities about protection, strength and healing. They are also forest managers whose foraging habits and mighty claws aerate the soil, while scat spreads vital seeds and contributes to nutrient cycling. Burt Awelagte is from the greater Othole family of Zuni Pueblo artists. His late cousin Joey Quam helped him get started in carving. We adore Burt's animals like this growling Bear made from a lively alabaster. Eyes are from jet inlays. About 2 3/4" long, 3/4" wide and roughly 1 3/4" tall.
