Carlos Laate started making pottery in 1987. After high school graduation and military service, he came home and began as a jeweler, then a carver and eventually clay work. His inspiration comes from his grandparents who were also silversmiths and potters, his parents were as well. He acknowledges that Mother Earth gives all the materials to work with, no traders and money exchanged to get what is already provided. Representations of important water creatures like Frogs and tadpoles live on the carapace of Carlos Laate's natural clay and pigments pottery Turtle. Turtles have a rain association in Zuni. About 5 1/2" long, 4 3/8" wide and 1 3/4" tall. Signed by the artist.
