There is much work to do in protecting Wolves. They are essential in the great plan of life designed by the Creator. Wolves and other wild canines teach us spiritual values like cultivating strong families and being good leaders. Many Indigenous societies regard wolves as sacred, including them in stories of origin as first ancestors who were transformed from wolves into men. A wolf is one of the revered animals within a Six-Directions grouping, associated with strong hunting powers by the Zuni Pueblo People.

European colonizers nearly hunted wolves to extinction which required them to be placed under the Endangered Species Act in 1974. In 2011 Congress removed protections for wolves in the Northern Rockies. In 2020, the then Presidential administration stripped them of critical protections across the rest of the country.

Indigenous activists have urged the Department of Interior to take emergency steps to restore federal protections for beneficial wolves. Traditional ecological wisdom helps us understand that healthy functioning landscapes require the presence of wolves. Join the pack and become an advocate and volunteer to help our wolf brothers. Lewis Malie's rich fossilized ivory carving depicts a clan of wild canines with drilled eyes that are ever watchful for their future. About 1 1/4" tall, 3/4" wide and 1" long.
