Zuni artist Dee Edaakie was influenced by his uncle carving great Gibbs Othole. He began a career by sanding rough stones in his uncle's studio. Prior to that he studied painting using pencils and watercolors to create landscapes and animals. Symbolizing potential, Corn-Maiden emerges from corn with etched kernels on her body. Dee's stylized Corn Maiden is carved from dyed alunite adorned with turquoise inlays. Facial features are from iridescent mother-of-pearl, watery abalone and bright red coral inlays. Approximately 1 5/8" tall, 1 1/4" wide and 1 1/4" deep.
