Pueblo People revere Bears as kindred spirits because of a powerful ability to stand upright, like standing next to your brother. In Zuni Pueblo standing bears are regarded as demonstrating healing and strength. The Native Civil Rights leader and Ponca Chief Standing Bear stood in his power and argued in U.S. District Court in 1879 in Omaha that Indigenous Peoples are "persons within the meaning of the law" and have the right of habeas corpus. His case became the first Indigenous person judicially granted civil rights under American law.
