Spring Chinook Salmon

By Robert Michael Weahkee

Animal: Chinook Salmon, Material: Antler
This offering is sold.
Coast Salish Nations share creation stories that revere chinook salmon as sentient relatives who willingly give themselves for human nourishment and those of the great orcas. The first spring run includes ceremonies where thanks is given to the Creator and the salmon themselves. Robert Michael Weahkee's chinnok salmon is sculpted from antler. He takes the wabi-sabi approach when antler pieces have more natural texture, something he finds beautiful. He loves how antler can be so versatile taking to a nice polish while being rough and textured at the same time as seen in this approximately 9 1/4" long, 1 3/8" wide and 1 5/8" tall water friend with turquoise eyes and jet paste spots.
