In the spring of 1950, The Capitan Gap Fire took hold in the Lincoln National Forest of New Mexico. A severely burned 3-month old baby black Bear was spotted clinging to a charred tree and rescued by Taos Pueblo's "Snowballs" Crew of brave firefighters. The little one was treated and became a living symbol of the devastation of wildfires and how to prevent human-caused forest fires. We've always adored Carlton Etsate's Smokey Bears. This colorful friend with turquoise eyes, is composed from carved turquoise, jasper, sodalite, serpentine and pipestone. He clutches a miniature shovel, a vital firefighting tool, from wood and sterling silver. About 1 7/8" tall, 3/4" wide and 1/2" deep.
