Robert Michael Weahkee's late grandmother Edna Leki taught him to carve using antler. Her father was Teddy Weahkee and she was probably the first female carver at Zuni, as the Weahkee family is among the oldest carving families. When you shop keshi.com you're supporting an Indigenous artist like Robert who sets his own wholesale prices in keeping with our mission of promoting equitable treatment of artists.
We love Robert's graceful Corn-Maiden sculpted from shed antler. A small carved Eagle feather frames jet paste eyes and a turquoise voice of wisdom. A corn body is highlighted with colorful turquoise, red coral, iridescent gold lip shell, pen shell and lapis lazuli inlays. A small offering necklace is laced with exquisite baby olive heishe, perhaps black tourmaline, howlite, delicious strawberry quartz, lapis lazuli and refreshing lemon quartz beads. A serene presence for any space measuring about 7 7/8" tall, 1 1/2" wide and 1 3/4" deep.
