Peacocks are colorful pheasants in the peafowl family. They were designated as the national bird of India in 1963. Known as mayura in Sanskrit, peacocks hold an honored place often depicted in temple art, mythology, poetry, music and traditions. Gilbert Bowannie's foraging bird from sodalite displays a relaxed train with jet in turquoise eye spots. A male peacock spreads its tail feathers in a spectacular fan display of blue and green. Each feather hosts an eye-like shape giving the illusion of large penetrating eyes. Not only do these eyes attract mates, but they also scare away potential predators and act as camouflage. Eyes are from jet in turquoise inlays, while a crest is from shell and turquoise. About 2 1/2" long, 1 5/8" wide and 1 3/4" tall.
