Enchanted Corn Maiden

By Kateri Quandelacy Sanchez, Zuni-Acoma

Animal: Corn Maiden, Material: Labradorite
This offering is sold.

The enchanting colors in labradorite are not actually present in the stone but are the result of light play within the stone. Labradorite is a feldspar with a crystalline structure that forms very thin compacted layers. When light hits the surface of the stone, it travels down through the layers which reflect, refract and diffuse the white light. Some colors are absorbed while the reflecting ones we see as flash on the stone's surface. Kateri Quandelacy Sanchez's Corn-Maiden has been sculpted from labradorite with mesmerizing blue, golden yellow and green hues. An overlaid face is from gold lip shell etched and filled with jet paste, while a sugilite inlay adorns. About 2 1/2" tall, 2 1/2" wide and 1 1/2" deep.
