Mountain-lions are ecosystem managers who foster biodiversity. As apex predators they keep ungulates alert and moving, preventing overgrazing and erosion of water sources. Kills provide food for other animals. A mother mountain lion devotes her life to raising kittens, teaching survival skills and how to establish good territories. In Zuni Pueblo tradition, a mountain lion is the eldest brother and most important of the Six Directional animals. Stealthy in nature, a mountain lion carving is brought along for success in the hunt. These magnificent felines teach us to set healthy boundaries in our lives. Abby Panteah carved an approximately 4" long, 3/4" wide and 1 5/8" tall mountain lion (cougar, puma or panther) from a stunningly striped onyx. A lovely turquoise heartline and eyes were inlaid by Clayton Panteah.
