An anthropomorphized leaf-nosed bat called Camazotz or Zotzilaha Chamalcan is an ancient Mayan Bat god believed to represent night, death and sacrifice. Because beneficial bats lived in caves around sacred cenotes, Indigenous Mesoamerican societies regarded these mammals as being associated with the underworld. What a chilling sight at dusk when millions of bats would swarm out of the mysterious underworld to begin their nightly duties. Peter Sohappy's pollinator has been carved from found stone and has drilled eyes, leather and a silver bead accent. The leather is about 10", while the bat itself is about 2 3/8" long, 2 3/8" wide and 1/4" deep.
