Some Indigenous cultures from the Pacific Northwest and California revere condors as beings with great spiritual power even giving traditional dances to honor them. After the arrival of European colonizers, both Native Peoples and condors suffered genocidal attacks. The condors were shot or poisoned. Today the California condor is Critically Endangered. Lead ammunition fragments in dead animals poisons condors as they consume leftovers, which is the leading cause of death.
