Indigenous Hawai'ians believe the first man on Mother Earth was the result of a union between a woman and a shark god named Kamohoaliʻi who is the oldest and highest-ranking brother of the volcano goddess Pele. Sharks are family members who represent guidance or aumakua, spiritual beings that can take the form of objects or animals. Herbert Halate's sleek shark is sculpted from white marble to a size of approximately 3 5/8" long, 7/8" wide and 1 1/4" tall. Sensing eyes are from turquoise inlays and etched gills breathe life.
