Bryston Bowannie started carving Katsina dolls when he was 14 or 15, then moved over to carving in rock in 1988. His was influenced by his brother Calvert Bowannie and Ed Lementino. The brothers descend from the greater Panteah family of Zuni artists. Their late father Phillip Bowannie and late grandfather Bert Bowannie were noted carvers. Bryston's wonderful Bison (or buffalo) has been carved from a white marble to a dimension of approximately 3 3/8" long, 1" wide and 1 7/8" tall. Bright eyes are from turquoise inlays, while mighty horns are from jet. Shaggy fur is beautifully incised.
