Ancient roots go very deep, perhaps thousands of years when it comes to Kewa mosaic jewelry. Examples of mosaic works have been unearthed at sacred sites like Chaco Canyon in New Mexico. Artisans would inlay pieces of turquoise and shell onto a base to create meaningful designs. Eleanor Melton continues in the tradition of her ancestors with a pair of gorgeous mosaic dangle earrings. A bed of verdant serpentine is host to hand-cut sections of rich jet, earthy pipestone, light-catching mother-of-pearl and sterling silver. Including the hooks, dimensions of these medium-weight dangle earrings are about 1 3/4" long, 7/8" wide and 1/8" deep. Signed by the artist.
