Zuni artist Dee Edaakie was influenced by his uncle carving great Gibbs Othole. He began a career by sanding rough stones in his uncle's studio. Prior to that he studied painting using pencils and watercolors to create landscapes and animals. Symbolizing potential, Corn-Maiden emerges from corn with etched kernels on her body. Dee's Corn Maiden is carved from peacock ore pyrite adorned with lapis lazuli and turquoise inlays. Facial features are from turquoise, pen shell, mother-of-pearl and coral inlays. Approximately 1 3/4" tall, 1 3/4" wide and 1 1/4" deep.
