For some ancient Indigenous Mesoamerican cultures, Snakes guarded stored corn, a life-giving food. They were associated with spiritual power and rebirth. Wall of Coatepantli or Serpents decorated many sacred spaces too. Zuni carver Jensen Charlie, III's wonderful coiled reptile reminds us that removing vital snakes from any ecosystem could result in an increase of rodent populations creating issues like crop destruction and the spread of disease. We love the diamond-shaped and cross-hatching designs on the turquoise-eyed snake from fish rock serpentine that measures about 3/8" tall, 1 5/8" wide and 3/4" deep.
