A gracious Olla Maiden Grandmother is wrapped tightly in a fringed shawl and is happy in giving thanks for the life-giving water, represented with colorful lapis lazuli pieces, that fills the olla or water jar sculpted from turquoise. In the old days, Zuni women gathered water in large pottery vessels carried on their heads. Kateri Quandelacy Sanchez carved this piece from rich pipestone with care and an exquisite attention to detail. Facial features accented by whorled hair are from iridescent gold lip shell that's been etched and filled with jet paste. About 3 5/8" tall, 1 1/2" wide and 5/8" deep.
