Fascinating hematite is an iron oxide constituting about 70% iron which contributes to its nice weightiness in hand. Millions of years ago when Earth was covered in primordial oceans, there was an abundance of iron naturally in the water. The ancient oceans began filling with oxygen that bound with the iron-rich water forming rust particles. Over vast amounts of time they sank to the ocean's floor, compressing into banded iron ore deposits which formed hematite. Brion Hattie's greeting Bear has been sculpted from a gorgeous hematite with very subtle sparkle to a size of approximately 3 1/4" long, roughly 1 5/8 wide and 2 1/2" tall. Tiny eyes are from turquoise inlays, while a precision point is from iridescent mother-of-pearl. Turquoise and fine red coral beads also adorn the offering bundle.
