Adrian Leon creates exquisite woodworks like this miniature Hopi Mockingbird Katsina doll who's intricately embellished with pipe cleaner, toothpicks, cloth, thread and a wooden bead on a cottonwood body painted with colorful acrylics. Mockingbird Katsina is known as Yapa or Yaupa, a spirit that figures in Hopi Katsina ceremonies. Mockingbird is credited as the spirit being who first taught mankind to speak. The word 'peace' is thoughtfully painted on one leg. Adrian said Katsina dolls represent everything in the universe. Whatever can be thought of, there is a dancer for that. He said that every time he sells the dolls he says "a prayer that wherever they go, let them heal whoever has problems, or let their town become peaceful and gain what they need because they do have strong power." Bart Gasper, Jr.'s A:tchia' la to pa Knifewing katsina doll has been masterfully carved from traditional cottonwood root. We're astonished by his mastery in wood carving, including painting and pyrogravure artistry. Knifewing is a sacred guardian for the A:Shiwi (The People). Knifewing is brother to Rainbowman who is a Bringer of Rain. Powerful wings, necklace and feathered headdress adorn Knifewing who protects from above, while a Zuni Sunface represents a balance of the elements. Other exquisite features include Mother Earth's bounty: a vibrant blooming flower, corn, important water creatures like Frog and Dragonfly, perhaps turkey tracks and Deer. The Sha'lak'o are coming! As fall transitions into winter, the most important religious celebration of the year will soon be here. The whole village at Zuni has been preparing throughout the year for the sacred activities. Each of the real-life Sha'lak'o stand at approximately 10 to 12 feet tall.

Artist Felino Eriacho expresses his reverence in a masterfully hand carved cottonwood "Shalako" katsina doll with stunning details like intricately etched feathers and facial features. He makes the incredible pastel-like pigments from plants and minerals he forages, mixing them according to tradition and experience. This practice can take a full year to complete due to seasonal changes. These natural paints are mesmerizingly beautiful giving the museum-quality woodwork a softly-aged appearance.
