Teachers of tradition, Katsinas are powerful and immortal spirits to the Hopi People. They are called
tithu or
katsintithu, sacred supernatural beings who function as messengers between the spiritual worlds. They bring goodwill and harmony. Katsina dolls are representations of these beings and are not sacred themselves. Virgil Long is a wonderful woodworker in cottonwood creating vibrant acrylic-painted Katsina dolls like his latest offering,
Turtle Boy. Including base, measurements of this detailed work are approximately 14 1/2" tall, 4 1/2" wide and 2 7/8" deep. Signed by the artist.
