Maxx Laate started carving in 1987 with a pocket knife. His brother Pernell Laate (d) helped him with ideas. Together they learned the art and referred to magazines, wildlife postcards and books to get an idea of how an animal might act in its environment.
Maxx has truly captured the fearlessness of a charismatic and ground dwelling roadrunner in a large piece of antler. Textured legs and "x" shaped feet grasp, while an etched body with lovely plumage displays a sense of rapid movement. Stunning turquoise inlays adorn a crested head with an open beak and eyes are from inlaid jet. Incredibly, roadrunners are fast and tough enough to take out a rattlesnake. A gorgeously striking size at approximately 10" tall, 2" wide and 11 3/4" long. Signed by the artist. Extra shipping charges may apply.
Maxx Laate is beloved for his gorgeous fetish carvings but he's also a wonderful jeweler. His folks Gretchen and Bennie Laate (d), and his sister Margie Kaamasee are jewelers. Hand-made from sterling silver and sky blue turquoise, Maxx's cross pendant includes small intricate details that add depth and texture. This lovely pendant is an eye-catching size at about 3 3/4" long and 2" wide. Signed by the artist. The silver snake chain is not included but is available and sold separately here.
Maxx Laate is an extraordinary artist, teaching many in his family the art of fetish carving. We're inspired with the power conveyed from his turquoise Eagle head adjustable bolo tie. Beautifully incised feathers, a magnificent beak and an eye of jet are surrounded by a handmade bezel of sterling silver, with turquoise embellishments. This handsome station is about 1 1/2" wide and 3/4" deep. A hand-braided black leather bolo tie is finished off with sterling silver tips, and together measure approximately 46" long. Signed by the artist.
A portion of the proceeds from the sale of this eagle fetish will go to the Zuni Eagle Sanctuary. Please see our resources page for more information on the sanctuary.
