The Indigenous Wayuu Nation in both Colombia and Venezuela are the direct descendants of the Arawak People who once inhabited a huge portion of the southern Caribbean before European colonization. The Wayuu’s worldview is chock full of stories about the sea and its inhabitants. They consider themselves protectors of an ancient culture based on maintaining a harmonious alliance with nature, the mountains, the trees and animals who are regarded as kin. Dreams of marine turtles are considered messages from Maleiwa (God) and the ancestors. Joshua Qualo's adorable Turtle is carved from antler to a size of approximately 3 1/2" long, 1 1/2" wide and 1" tall. Eyes are from turquoise inlays.
Turtles have a rain association in Zuni where their shells are prized for making rattles used by the Rain Dancers. Joshua Qualo's stunning turtle painting honors this traditional worldview in an 8" by 10" original colorful acrylic on canvas board composition. The lovely reptile feels like its swimming with ease while thunderous rain cloud elements replenish water stores. Signed by the artist.
